Michael Steven Shirley, 77, of Colby, Kansas, died Friday, July 17, 2026. He was born on August 13, 1948, to Leigh Bennett and Beulah (Parsons) Shirley. On January 9, 1971, he married the love of his life, Sharon (Johnson). From this union came four of their greatest blessings Michael, Nichelle, Alisha, and Karli.
Mike lived a life centered on family, friendship, hard work, and laughter. He was a devoted husband as well as a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with the people he loved.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; his children, Mike (Cassie) Shirley, Nicki (Chris) Carroll, Alisha (Lyle) Dixson, and Karli Kriss; 13 cherished grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; extended family and countless friends whose lives were made richer by knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leigh and Beulah Shirley, and his in-laws Bud and Donna (Weis) Johnson.
Mike spent much of his professional career as a sales representative for Monsanto, where he became affectionately known as “Monsanto Mike.” His success was never just about selling a product—it was about people. Mike had a rare ability to connect with others, quickly build trust, and develop meaningful relationships. He made people feel valued, and many customers became lifelong friends. Whether he was visiting with someone one-on-one or standing in front of a large group with no preparation, Mike’s confidence, authenticity, and quick wit made him unforgettable. Later in his career, Mike became a truck driver, a role that fit him perfectly. The open road gave him even more opportunities to do what he loved most—visit with people. Every stop was a chance to share a story, make someone laugh, and turn another stranger into a friend.
Mike was a member of St. Thomas Lodge #306 for 56 years, serving as Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 1982. He was active in the Hi-Plains Shrine Club and was a charter member of the Go-Cart patrol, along with his dad, Leigh. Mike also finished his 16 1/2 years in the Kansas National Guard as an E6 Staff Sergeant.
He had a lifelong passion for motorsports, especially drag racing. One of his greatest joys was helping his son build his first drag racing pickup, “The Brown Pig,” which remains in the family today. Whenever he had the chance, Mike climbed into the passenger seat and loved every minute of the ride.
His greatest passion, however, was his family. He was the kind of dad, Crampa, Gramps or Pramps, who always showed up no matter what was needed. He was there for ball games, concerts, school events, races, and all the moments—big and small—that mattered to the people he loved. His family never had to wonder if Mike would be there. He already was.
We will always cherish the countless summer days spent together at the lake as a family and the comfort of knowing we could call him for anything. If he didn’t know the answer, he always knew someone who did. He was our steady source of wisdom, support, and love.
More than anything, Mike’s legacy is found in the relationships he built. He could tell a story like few others and had a gift for making everyone feel like a friend. He showed up with encouragement. He showed up with laughter, a nickname, or a perfectly timed joke. Whether at the racetrack, in the stands, on the road, or around the dinner table, he will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious humor, and incredible ability to make people laugh.
By that measure, Michael Steven Shirley lived an extraordinary life and touched countless others. His laughter, his stories, his friendships, and his love are all part of a legacy that will continue through the family he cherished and the many people fortunate enough to call him a friend.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby with burial in the church cemetery.
