Funeral Planning

Planning a Funeral Mass or Prayer Service

Funeral planning typically takes place during a meeting between the priest who will be presiding over the funeral rites and family members of the deceased. If a funeral home is involved, they will assist the family in arranging this meeting. If a funeral home is not involved, the family should contact the priest at the Parish Office by calling 785-462-2179 to schedule a meeting to make the necessary arrangements.

You are welcome to download the Funeral Planning Sheet to begin the planning process prior to meeting with the priest or deacon who will preside over the funeral rites. This is a fillable form. After you have completed it on your computer, be sure to save it. Then print it out to bring with you. You may also simply print the form and manually fill it out and bring it with you. Please note that no funeral planning is finalized until after a meeting with the presider of the funeral.

Also note: if you are making funeral preparations well in advance, we may not be able to honor requests for specific personnel.

Charlene Maxine (Seeberger) Barnett, 87, of Colby, died Saturday, April 4, 2026. She was born on July 24, 1938, to Edwin Charles and Loretta Elizabeth (Schiltz) Seeberger. She was born and raised on the family farm east of Rexford, KS. She attended school in Rexford until her senior year, when the high school burned down. She then had to transfer to Selden High School for her senior year, graduating in 1956.

Charlene was united in marriage to Darrell Barnett on June 6, 1957, in Selden, KS. They lived on a farm north of Rexford before moving to Longmont, CO in October 1961. While there, they raised three children, Sandra, Janice and Bernard. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont. Darrell and Charlene moved to Colby in September 1993. She then became a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church in Colby.

Rarely was there a time to find Charlene at a standstill with idle hands since she maintained a high standard in all she did. Her homemade meals, baking, family, friends and community volunteering filled her hours. The spring, summer and fall found Charlene outside, working in her yard and gardens. Most people only got to enjoy her front yard and flowers, but her true love of nature was found in her backyard flower gardens, especially her roses.

Winter months were filled with quilts and embroidery projects that she shared with her volunteer projects, family and friends. She also found time to include volunteer work with church functions, Hospice, RSVP, Daughters of Isabella, Queen Mary Circle, the Colby hospital Pink Ladies and the Prairie Museum Quilting Ladies. She recently joined a fun group of ladies that play Canasta. Another favorite was attending the Colby High School and College sporting events, where she got to visit with her friends and enjoy the games.

Charlene loved spending time with friends and family, making friends everywhere she went. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her ultimate blessings. They always knew when they opened the freezer, there would be some of their favorite cookies or brownies. The family BBQs and picnics were remembered by all that got to enjoy her potato salad, her baked treats, especially her chocolate sheet cake, and the yard/card games. Her oven was always warming up in the early morning hours to bake treats to share with visitors or send home with those that came to share time with her.

Charlene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her kind and loving spirit will continue to bring fond memories of her dedication to her family and friends. During the holidays at her house, there was sure to be a Bunco or Farkle party with some fun prizes. Charlene was a beautiful, quiet, strong soul, but laughter and a fun time were guaranteed when she was present.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrell and sisters, Carol Allaman and Dorothy Price.

She is survived by her children, Sandy (Harry) Johnston, Orange Park, FL, Janice (Al) Ackerman, Hays, KS, and Bernie (Kris), Mead, CO; seven grandchildren, Chris, Tony, Amber, Mandie, Ryan, Darin and Brandon and 14 great grandchildren. Dennis John Diederich “Denny” died Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the age of 81. Denny was one of seven children born to Julius “Dulie” and Mae (Weaver) Diederich on February 10, 1945, in Dresden, Kansas. Denny grew up in Selden and attended Selden Elementary School and Selden Rural High School. He worked at the HI-WAY Café, a restaurant his mother owned in Selden as a fry cook until he graduated from high school. He then attended US Trade School in Kansas City to become an auto mechanic. Upon graduation he moved to Colby where he was employed by EC Riley Motor Company.

Denny met the love of his life after moving to Colby, a young lady by the name of Sandy Huelsmann, also from Selden. Their connection was immediate, and they formed a bond that would last a lifetime and bring immeasurable joy to their family. On November 26, 1966, they were united in marriage at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, Kansas. Their union was filled with devotion, laughter, and steadfast support for one another through all of life’s ups and downs.

In 1967 he went to basic training for the National Guard Army and specialized in Wheel and Tracks and was awarded the Army Sharpshooter Rifle M-14 badge. He also served as a cook during his service on weekends. While away at basic training his first-born baby girl was born on July 26, 1967, and was named Kimberly Ann. Though he couldn’t hold her until three months later, the overwhelming love he felt for his daughter and growing family was ever-present in his heart. During this time, he also worked for his father-in-law John Huelsmann building houses and learning valuable skills that he would later use to build their family home, a true labor of love for those he cherished most. In July of 1968 he began a career with Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company (KN Energy) and continued in that line of work until he retired in 2005 at the age of 60. During the early years of his career with the gas company, he also became the father of three wonderful sons, Brian, Dustin and Darius, each of whom brought him immense pride, happiness and maybe a few trials along the way.

In his spare time, Denny loved fishing, hunting, golfing, having coffee with the guys and spending time with his family. He found joy in life’s simple moments and was deeply grateful for the laughter, companionship, and memories shared with those he loved. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing basketball for a local men’s team called the UKKER Brothers. He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Denny was also a big fan of Kansas City Chiefs Football, Kansas State Wildcats Football and KU Basketball and never missed watching a game, often sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends.

Denny and Sandy resided in Colby all their married life, building a home filled with love, warmth, and lasting memories. His unconditional love, unwavering support, and guidance shaped the lives of his four children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Denny leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Sandra “Sandy” Jean Diederich of Colby, Kansas; daughter, Kim Diederich of Omaha, Nebraska; sons, Brian Diederich (Migi) of Henderson, Nevada, Dustin Diederich of Atwood, Kansas and Darius Diederich of Gardner, Kansas; sister, Darla Zerr (Albert) of Hoxie, Kansas; grandchildren, Tasha Reeves of Scottsdale, Arizona (Kim), Lauren Diederich, Overland Park, Kansas (Darius), Riley Diederich, Overland Park, Kansas (Darius), Talen Doro (Dustin) and Brandi Engelbrecht, of Atwood, Kansas (Dustin); and many friends and relatives, whose lives were brighter for having known him.

He was preceded in death by parents, Julius “Dulie” and Ellen Maebelle “Mae” (Weaver) Diederich; sisters, Marlene "Molly" Brin, Leona “Butch” Clark, Janet Laevenstein and brothers Dale Diederich and Jerry “Gabby” Diederich. Though he is gone, the love and gratitude felt for him will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

The family will receive friends from beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 20, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, Kansas with interment following the service in Sacred Heart Cemetery. It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Patrick Joseph Giebler, a devoted husband, loving father, and dedicated educator, who left this world surrounded by family and faith.

Patrick was a man who found joy in the simple and profound moments of life—discussing literature with his students, cheering on his three sons in all their pursuits, and sharing laughter and love with his wife Terri who stood by him through every aspect of life for 54 years.

As an English teacher, Patrick inspired generations of students to see the beauty and truth in words. He believed deeply that language could shape hearts and minds, and his classroom was a place where curiosity thrived and every voice mattered.

The girls were born a month early before ultrasounds were available and it was a surprise to their parents. Unprepared for twins, they were referred to as twin A and twin B and had to be named before they left the hospital. Jean quickly named them Anne and Barbara. As identical twins they were forever connected and spoke to each other every day and often long into the nights throughout their lives. Their family moved to Collinsville, Oklahoma when the twins were twelve years old because Walter obtained employment at American Airlines. Soon after they moved, the family was blessed with another daughter, Susan. Although it was a shock to move to Oklahoma from Queens, Anne and Barbara thrived in their education graduating from Collinsville High School in 1951 as valedictorian and salutatorian respectively.

Anne met Donald Guilfoyle through his sister Therese in January 1953. Don knew she was “the one” when they attended Mass together and she brought her Catholic prayer book along on the date. Don was drafted into the Army and their courting turned quickly into an engagement. The engagement was short, and a perfect wedding was planned with the marriage ceremony happening on September 26th,1953, at St. Therese of the Little Flower Church in Collinsville, OK. While working as a secretary, Anne chose her wedding dress off the rack over her lunch hour in Tulsa, Ok. Anne and Don were married for 71 years and 7 months. Theirs was the perfect love story and they cherished each other unconditionally. Their marriage has been a model of true commitment. Don and Anne were blessed with six daughters and two sons.

Anne enjoyed her role as mother and homemaker. She loved to cook delicious meals and bake for her family, friends and neighbors. Anne and Don moved multiple times before landing in Colby in 1973. She made good friends wherever she went. Anne made efforts to visit people in nursing homes and had a knack of finding people who needed a friend. For this reason, she loved her job as a home care assistant after her kids were all in school. In this role, she connected with her clients like they were her own family. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Catholic school especially in the library. Anne loved books and she passed this love on to her children and grandchildren by taking them to the local library frequently. Growing up during the depression years Anne learned how to stretch a dollar to raise her large family on one income, but that did not curb her generous spirit. She was always willing to share her time and talents and homemade baked goods. Entertaining guests was something she loved. She often had dinners for friends, college students, priests, nuns, and deacons to name a few. Anne also loved to host coffees with her beloved friend circle. Birthdays, holidays and other special occasions were often shared around the famous large dining room table. Laughter, games, memories and amazing food gave many generations a sense of belonging.

Anne was an avid supporter of the activities in which her children and grandchildren participated. She spent countless hours traveling to and attending sporting events, county fairs, dog shows, music programs, dance recitals and style reviews. She was so proud of all the accomplishments and achievements of her family. She and Don were also super fans of the Colby High School and Colby Community College athletic teams and attended games long after their children had graduated. When they could no longer go to the games they continued to watch their favorite teams online.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of Colby, KS; children, Eleanor (Matt) Dumler, of Oakley, KS, Elieen (Walt) Woofter, of Overland Park, KS, James (Kathy) Guilfoyle, of Fairhope, AL, Emily Strange, of Colby, Evelyn (Mark) Diederich, of Greenleaf, KS, Elizabeth (Darcy) Guilfoyle, of Mancos, CO, and Joseph Guilfoyle, of Colby, KS; 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean, Roderick, and Walter Haas; twin sister Barbara Helm; infant daughter Margaret Mary Guilfoyle; grandson Jordan Harris; granddaughter-in-law Christa Guilfoyle, and great grandson Ethan Rohr.

Kathleen Marie (McIlnay) Tubbs was born on January 9, 1946, at St. Thomas Hospital in Colby, KS. She was the fifth of seven children born to Leland Stanford and Celeste (Schwebach) McIlnay. Kathleen was called home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2025, at the age of 79.

Kathleen, fondly called Tat by her mother, lived the first 18 years of her life on a farm located 12 miles southwest of Colby. Kathleen’s days on the farm were filled with tending to the chickens and sheep, helping her mother cook and bake for the three meals a day expected on the farm, and even involved driving the cabless tractors to help raise the crops. From an early age, Kathleen was a devoted daughter who had a deep respect for her parents and was instilled with a work ethic that helped contribute to the family’s success. Life on the farm was filled with an avid love for God and many great adventures and antics of the siblings. Kathleen attended all 12 years of schooling at Colby Public School. In school, she was involved in Pep Club, sang in the Glee Club, held a class officer position, and served the community through Kayettes.

Shortly after high school in 1964, Kathleen was hired by Kansas State Farm Management where she began as a receptionist and quickly aspired to being a member of a traveling team that crossed the NW part of the state aiding farmers with their financial decisions for tax planning. Kathleen had found her passion in the working world. Her love of numbers, a sharp pencil, and her keen and natural ability to balance the books would lead to a lifetime of being in charge of family member’s and business’s books and taxes.

As Kathleen worked at Kansas State Farm Management, she also continued to help her parents on the farm. It was on this farm one day that unbeknownst to her, would begin a lifetime of love with Jim Tubbs. Jim’s family was in the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury business in Atwood. One day Jim went with his father to deliver a new Ford Station Wagon to Leland at the farm. Kathleen was just arriving back from the field driving that open cab tractor as Jim stood waiting for his dad. Jim knew he had to meet her, and he found a way.

Over the next four years, Kathleen was courted by Jim. They went to dances, traveled to the lake, where they enjoyed both fishing and water skiing, and really just simply spent a great amount of time in the quiet moments of life enjoying each other’s company and building a foundation of friendship, appreciation, and love for another person that would endure the test of time. Many a night, Jim drove to Colby from Atwood to see Kathleen and his Ford Falcon would be parked in the McIlnay farmyard. In 1966, Jim’s family moved their automobile business to Colby. Still dating, Jim convinced his father that despite the fact Kathleen was his girlfriend, she would be a good fit for the dealership to work the numbers. Shortly after, Kathleen was hired to be the CFO. She worked for Tubbs & Sons Ford Sales and the Tubbs farming operation Triple T Farms until the time of her death or for what would be 59 years. The family counted on her to always keep the numbers straight and the cash counted.

Finally, on May 4, 1968, Jim and Kathleen were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby. The couple settled into married life in Colby and formed an unbreakable 57-year bond of love, laughter, and happiness. The couple had two children, a daughter, Sherrie Lynn and a son, George Leland. Kathleen loved being a wife and a mother. She worked long hours on the books for the businesses but always put family first. It was important to Kathleen that the kids always had a hot breakfast in the morning and a good meal at night, and she was an excellent cook! Peanut butter cookies, chocolate delight, a delicious cheese ball, and fried chicken were just a few of her specialties. Not to mention that her suppers were always served with a glass of sweet tea. She took care that homework was completed and was always involved at the school doing everything from Head Room Mom to driving the high school cheerleaders to cheer camp. She never missed an event and this held true when she later had grandchildren. Kathleen was also the family go to when things weren’t quite right. She was an excellent listener and was never afraid to give a person the straight truth of the matter. She was the star running back of the group as she could seemingly listen and make decisions that moved everyone to a better forward position. The love and dedication she had toward her parents and siblings also remained strong as life brought along its many challenges for them. “Others before self” was a motto she not only promoted, but lived by every day.

Kathleen was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Alter Society. She loved playing Yahtzee, watching The Price is Right, and taking a long weekend getaway to KC. In addition, she enjoyed the numerous family trips to the lake and the summer vacations where many memories were made over the years. Her yard, flowers, and garden were a sense of pride for her. Kathleen loved the holidays especially Christmas and then Halloween where she passed out $2 bills to all the children who came to her door. Her greatest joy in her later years came from her grandchildren. Popcorn, tea, and some chocolate were always on the snack list as they arrived. Her door was always open as they needed everything from a hug to a piece of sound advice. Finally, it was all about the Jayhawks and the Chiefs on game day.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Burt McIlnay, and her sisters Carol Baalman and Tracey Perkins.

She is survived by her husband Jim; her two children, Sherrie (Brent) Wiedeman and George (Lindsey) Tubbs, all of Colby; five grandchildren, Brady, Bryant, Carson, Landon, and Tomi: great granddaughter Jack; and siblings, LeeAnn Rehmer, David McIlnay, and Joe (Sheryl) McIlnay.

Visitation is 4-6:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 3, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby, with burial in the church cemetery. Lemmy Cordell Burvee was born on September 23rd, 2024, at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. Just two short weeks later, on October 7th, 2024, he passed peacefully in the loving arms of his family.

From the start, Lemmy was special. His arrival was somewhat of a surprise to his parents, so when life gave them lemons, they made a Lemmy. His bond with his brother, Milo, was unique—both shared a form of dwarfism and quickly began plotting against their older brother, Kellen. Though Cordell wasn’t necessarily named after the legendary Cordell Walker, the toughness and grit of that character would have served him well.

Lemmy was born with a congenital heart and lung disease that, together, left no viable chance of survival. He gifted the world with 14 precious days, and while the reason for those days, and not years, may never be known, perhaps the true meaning of his name can shed some light. Lemmy means “belonging to God,” and Cordell refers to a cord or rope maker. His presence tied together and strengthened the bonds of those around him, and that may be what he was sent here to do. Belonging solely to God and never to this life, Lemmy leaves behind a legacy that will continue to grow as each of us finds our sense of belonging and makes our own ropes that tether us to the faiths and friendships we hold dear.

Lemmy was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel Nora Burvee, and his grandfather, Jeffery Wallace Burvee. He leaves behind his parents, Tyler and Teri Burvee of Colby, KS; brothers, Kellen (17) and Milo (11); grandparents, Marla Burvee of Spring Hill, KS, and Michael and Connie Istas of Aurora, KS. Additionally, Lemmy was loved by and leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends both near and far.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at 585 N French Ave, Colby, KS 67701. A luncheon will immediately follow in the church basement. Donations made in lieu of flowers will be used by the family to honor Lemmy and pay it forward to the charities that filled his short life with comfort and memories. They can be sent to The Bank of Colby c/o Lemmy Cordell Burvee Memorial Fund, PO Box 405, Colby, KS 67701.

Even in semi-retirement, he stayed engaged with his community in Southeast Kansas, working a variety of jobs including airport manager at KPPF, and the service department at Prairie Land Partners, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers and customers, often taking the “scenic route” on deliveries.

Jean was raised in a faith-filled Catholic home where the love of God and daily prayer were taught. Early education for Jean was in the Angelus school. They purchased a home on French Avenue in 1969 where Jean remained until she moved to Fairview Estates in 2021 and later to Prairie Senior Living Complex. The couple was blessed with four children - Charles, Joann, Steve and Wayne. A devout Catholic lifestyle continued with regular Mass attendance and involvement in the church. Since family was so important, Sundays after Mass were dedicated to spending time visiting parents and siblings around the area. Jean also enjoyed gardening, playing board games, card games, knitting and cross-stitch.

Jean was a homemaker for most of her younger years while the children were home and she took great pride in keeping a clean home and having the family together for homemade meals. She had some cleaning jobs outside the home and did some childcare for close family friends. Jean always had a servant’s heart, volunteered for several organizations including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Sacred Heart Altar Society, St. Jude Circle, Meals on Wheels and ACS Relay for Life. After the children moved out and started their families, her highlight was to prepare meals, bake cookies, pies and cakes, and make candy for special events and holidays when the family was all together. These days were full of love and laughter, games and, of course, Mass in which many times all of the family members would attend church together.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick in 2015; son Charles in 2005; sisters Marie Schwarz, Estelle Juenemann, Frances Schwarz and Emelyn Broeckelman and brothers Reynold and Robert Moellering.

Survivors include her children, Joann (Clint) Newton of Salina, Steve (Kim) Dempewolf of Colby, and Wayne (Regina) Dempewolf of Littleton, CO; daughter-in-law Dana Dempewolf of Colby; sister Betty Feldt; brothers, John and Bernie Moellering; grandchildren, Devlin (Miranda) Dempewolf, Tonya (Bobby) Lawson, Brett (Nichole) Dempewolf, Tina (JD) Grace, Carleigh (Chris) Haeffner, Stacey (Sterling) Montgomery, Lindsey (Robert) Bitondo, Jared (Talia) Dempewolf and Lauren (Kolton) Harting and 12 great grandchildren.

Frances “Fritz” Marie (Albers) Ryan, was born to Joseph C and Walburga (Dickman) Albers on January 22, 1939, and was released into the love of our Heavenly Father on April 30, 2024. She joined her heart to Dennis Ryan on May 25, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley (but only after he taught her to drink coffee-he said they couldn’t get married until she would drink coffee with him). They were blessed with 9 children: Angela (Jack) Myers, Alan (Sherri) Ryan, Cynthia (Frank)DeRee, Monique (Tom) Leavitt, Maureen (Tom) Bruggeman, Paula (Butch) Burris, Phillip (Alaina) Ryan, and Sharon Ryan, who are all left on this earth to continue the legacy of “The Ryan Brats.” Kevin (Elda) Ryan joined Dad (Dennis) in heaven to help prepare the way for Mom’s arrival.

“The Ryan Brats” of Denny and Fritz produced 25 grandchildren and 1 angel granddaughter,* and those 25 went on to bless Fritz with many more: Rianna & Erick (Frances, Katherine, Jacqueline), John (Kimber), Audrey & Travis (Sydney Haley, Kinsey [Dawson]), Megan & Chris (Aiden, Cass, Cain), Joshua & Michelle (Leah, Parker, Knox) Kayla & Travis (Oliver), Allyson & Kirk (Samantha, Luke) Greg, Alainna, Matthew & Janessa (Beckett, Bryar, Brodie), Garrett & Anne, Ashley & Brandon (Wyatt), Andrew & Melissa (Jaelyn, Nash), Alicia & Brandon (Kamryn, Koen) *Alexandria, Alison & Jake (Ellis, Beau), Clay & Kathy (Vanessa), Kalinda & Brock (Bonnie), Chase, Marc (Madilynn, Graesyn), Jordan (Destiny & Key [Kyro], Bryson), Aimee & Justin (Junior) Nicole (Juliet, Catalyna, Karsen), Alexa & Adam(Kincaid, Breccan, Avalyn, Aidan), Colby & Hunter, Clint & Taryn.

9 of her 13 siblings are also still on this earth, Bernard (Carolyn), Joan Lobmeyer, Mary Jean (Don Delzeit) Ann, Henry (Donna), Bob (Patsy), Rosanne (Marvin Labarge) Fred (Jenny) and Carla (John Deckert).

Siblings Ronnie, Cash, Frank, and Reinette have been preparing the way for her. (Frank probably put a frog in her halo).

She also leaves behind these siblings through love: Joe Schoepner, Annie Ostmeyer, David Ryan, Ethel Ortiz, and Judith Sears.

Mom lived a lot of life in the dashes between her birth and death. We won’t list everything she did and was, because we can’t find a publisher with enough paper to print it all. Oh how we will miss her, but we are joyous with the knowledge that when she closed her eyes for the last time on earth, she opened them to the Glory of His kingdom, and she will be very busy-for she has a lot of catching up to do with all her loved ones who went before her.

Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary in Colby. Elfriede U. Cooper died February 27, 2024 in Longmont, CO, at the age of 84.
On June 18, 1939, Edwin and Magda Gens-wein welcomed their new daughter into their home in Konstanz, Germany. As a result of her parents' support, Elfriede developed a quality work ethic and sound education.

At age 21, Elfriede set out to see the world with some savings and good language skills. She spent several years in the San Francisco area working to pay her way and also to change her status from im-migrant to U.S. citizen. Later she moved to Denver and continued working and enjoying big city living.

Elfriede met and married Gary E. Cooper, moving to the small Northwest Kansas city of Colby. After several years the couple moved to the country and it was there that Elfriede described as the best twenty years of her life. Being in the country allowed her to fully explore her respect for all things living: children, family, neighbors and friends as well as the animal and plant worlds of the area. She had endless knowledge of and admiration for the animals she raised as well as the wild birds, and she cultivated beautiful gardens year after year. Her fantastic cooking and hospitality made her home a welcoming place for guests from around the area and the world.

The small city also gave Elfriede the opportunity to visibly support her church, schools, city projects, political candidates and most of all her children, with their wants and needs.

At an age appropriate time, Elfriede and Gary began living in Green Valley, Arizona, establishing a second home there along with continued love of new neighbors, friends, and a new exploration of southwest living and growing things. Her love of birds and flowers expanded in the years spent in a warmer climate, and her Arizona home was a burst of color and hospitality.

Elfriede is survived by her husband Gary of Boulder, CO; son James of Hays, KS; daughter Anna Lull, son-in-law Andrew, and grandchildren Cooper, Sophia and Lucy, all of Boulder, CO; and son David of Hays, KS.

Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby with inurnment in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

She lived on a farm until 1938, then moved to St. Paul, NE after her father’s death. Her mother married Louie Sintek when she was five years old, and they returned to the farm.

On November 24, 1930, Donna D Horton, the fifth child of six children, entered this mortal world of humanity. Her parents, Blanche (Wilcox) and George M. Horton lived on a farm east of Lucerne, in Sheridan County, Kansas.

Life on the farm, in a community of many neighbors, in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s was challenging, fun, hard work, boring at times, interesting and sometimes sad. Along with her siblings, she attended Prairie View #10 (Lucerne) country school.

After WWII began, many changes occurred for all of the Horton family. The change for Donna was living in Lenora, KS and attending high school. After the war, she met “Buzz” (A.F.) Dempewolf and they were later married.

Their first home was in Russell, KS and over a year later, they moved to Norton, KS. At that time, Donna worked for Duckwalls. They later moved to Colby, KS where they resided for the next 40 years and raised their five children. She worked at Duckwalls in Colby, and later for JCPenney’s. In 1958, Southwestern Bell was hiring, she applied for the job and remained there for 23 years until her retirement.

Upon her husband’s retirement from Great Plains Electric, he started his own business of custom harvesting, and they traveled through Oklahoma up to the Dakotas to Canada. In 1988, they moved to Lenora, KS to be closer to their farming.

After the death of her husband in 1989, Donna remained in Lenora. She managed her farming, traveled a lot visiting her family and friends. She participated in various organizations while living in both Colby and Lenora. She particularly loved working with the Blood Bank in Colby and the Nutrition Council at the Lenora Senior Center in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. She enjoyed the Tuesday Bridge Club and The Pollyanna Club. Three of her greatest enjoyments were researching eight generations of family lineage, studying biblical history and helping others when needed.

Donna was also a Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Colby and later the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Norton.

FJ grew up as a farmer and rancher milking cows, breaking horses, herding cattle, farming dry land wheat, oats, and milo. She was born January 4, 1941, in Park, KS, to Alphonse and Matilda (Kuhn) Depperschmidt. She graduated from Park High School in 1958 and moved to Colby where she began working at Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator for 20+ years.

She met and married Duane Heble on October 6, 1962. They continued to make their home in Colby and welcomed and raised 3 children. Marilyn was always active and interested in all their activities, but she was also careful to raise them to be independent and not get in the way of “natural consequences”, which was tested more than once.

She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and volunteered in numerous capacities over the years, but best utilized her organization skills and compassion for others by coordinating funeral dinners for over a decade. She volunteered with R.S.V.P. in Colby, and lots of other community projects, she just really enjoyed being busy and helping out in any way she could.

Marilyn was very creative and enjoyed making handmade gifts for friends & family. Marilyn was also a great baker, her homemade pies were always greatly anticipated and requested by many. She enjoyed making them to share with friends as thank you or just because she was thinking about you. Marilyn had a big heart and a host of talents, but her biggest joy was her grandkids and sharing time with them. She instilled her love for games and playing cards with all of them. She loved playing cards, especially Rummy, and had her own version (Gma’s Rummy) where the rules could change at “Gmas” discretion. Cards brought her a lot of joy and camaraderie, and she was always up for another hand, usually outlasting everyone.

Her generosity of her time and involvement in the local groups and activities gave her the opportunity to develop countless friendships throughout the community, she valued these friendships greatly and truly cherished spending time with her friends and relatives. The beloved Sacred Heart “coffee group” was a constant over the last 30+ years, and a great source of sharing faith, deep friendships and lots of fun.

Duane C. Heble, 87, of Colby, KS passed away on Aug 20th, 2022, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, KS.

Duane was born in Benkelman, NE, May 6th, 1935, he was the 3rd child of Henry and Francis (Micek) Heble. Duane spent his childhood on the family farm, north of Atwood KS, and attended a country school through the 8th grade & Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, surrounded by Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. He attended High School and graduated in 1954 from St Joes’ Military Academy, in Hays, KS.

Duane enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea. He returned to Kansas and the family farm after his service. He met and married Marilyn Depperschmidt, Oct 6, 1962, and they moved to Colby, KS where they welcomed and raised 3 children.

In addition to farming, he began working at KN Energy in 1964. For 30+ years he would use his evenings, weekends, and vacation time to farm, which he took great pride in and demonstrated an incredible work ethic to his family. During his time at KN he became a skilled welder, a skill he used well into retirement to “modify” and engineer all sorts of things. Even though it was a demanding schedule he still took time to be involved in and enjoyed his kids’ activities some of which included Boys Scouts, Colby Swim Club, and coaching baseball teams.

Duane was a devout member of the Colby Sacred Heart Church, and over the years was an active member in Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, the cemetery and auction committee. One of his favorite roles after he retired was driving the school bus for the Sacred Heart School.

After retiring from KN Energy in 1995 it allowed more time for farming, and to explore other interests. He enjoyed A LOT of fishing and started an annual fishing trip with his son Blaine, brother in-laws and nephews which has now grown to include his grandsons. A tradition that has continued for the last 25+ years. After the trip last fall when all his grandsons were able to join him, he told us that would probably be the last year he would be able to go.

Duane was a lifelong learner and would “sit in” on classes at the college and was able to participate in several history classes and an archeological dig.

He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and attended as many sporting events, school activities, dance recitals and graduations as possible. They were a great source of joy and pride for him.

In all his endeavors he collected friends and stories. Duane loved to tell stories, many times the stories he told were better than the actual event itself. It is hard to talk about Duane, whether family, friend, acquaintance and not have a “story” to tell.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Francis Heble; sister Sr. Phyllis Marie Heble; brother Ron Heble, and his beloved daughter Brenda Heble.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Marilyn, of Colby, KS; children, Blaine (Vonceile), of Lindsborg, KS, and Becky (Scot) Bullock, of Leawood, KS; brother, Richard Heble, and his grandchildren, Hanna (Trevor) Whittaker, Clare Bullock, Colby Bullock, Blake Heble, Carly Bullock, and Brandt Heble.

On July 31, 2022, Harry Zaborski, of Colby, formerly of Goodland, entered into eternal rest at the age of 99 years old. Harry led a joyful life filled with faith, family and an unquenchable love of the outdoors. He was born September 11, 1922, in Toledo, Ohio to Walter and Lottie and the oldest son of six siblings. He attended Nativity Catholic School. The effects of the Depression made employment scarce, and Harry needed to help support his family. At the age of 15 he joined Civilian Conservation Corp, which provided work under President Franklin Roosevelt.

His unit was deployed to the mountains of Montana joining the many young men from all over the county to replenish the millions of trees in the forest lands made barren from fires and lumbering. Harry often talks of this experience as having a major influence on his life surrounded by the beauty of “Mother Earth.”

After two years in Montana, Harry returned to his family in Ohio where he found work at Willey’s Overland on an assembly line building Jeeps for our military’s use overseas. It was here that Harry met his future bride, Miss Helen Bitker.

During this time, World War II was raging overseas and in 1943, Harry, along with five of his best pals, enlisted in the United States Army. Due to his prior experience at Willey’s Overland, Harry was assigned to be a mechanic for the military’s wheeled vehicles with a rank of CPL/T5. During his deployment, he served in Normandy, France, the Ardennes, Belgium, and Rhineland, Germany. He never spoke of the horrific battles and war experience keeping those dark memories and scars hidden, other than to say that he would never forget his five closest friends who did not make it home.

Upon discharge, Harry and Helen were married on October 27, 1945, in Aberdeen, Maryland, settling back in Toledo, Ohio. Longing for the mountains of his youth, Harry and his family eventually relocated to Denver, Colorado where he made his living as an electrical and maintenance supervisor for the Public Service Company of Colorado. He enjoyed golfing and fishing trips with the family in the Rocky Mountains.

Harry was a member of the Knights of Columbus, which sponsored many activities at St. Clara’s Orphanage. Harry and Helen always looked forward to inviting 2 or 3 children from the orphanage to spend the holidays with their family.

Upon retirement, the couple moved to Brewster, KS. After 38 years of marriage, the couple separated, but because of their faith, never divorced. Harry moved to Goodland to be close to his daughter Judy and her family. He was always busy volunteering at OLPH Catholic Church, building birdhouses, biking, fishing, golfing and bird watching. He enjoyed drawing pictures, scrapbooking and telling stories. He had a tremendous imagination that entertained the grandkids with silliness and laughter.

He never met a stranger and was appreciative of all the kindhearted folks of Sherman County who would always take time to stop and visit with “this old grandpa Poppi,” while pedaling around town. Eventually, moving to Prairie Senior Living complex in Colby, he was very appreciative for the elder care under Dr. Matchell, Brian Unruh, and the nursing staff while enjoying the many activities provided by the community.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lottie; six siblings; Daniel, Helen, Doris, Christine, Alice and Gloria, of Ohio, wife Helen and daughter, Joanne Stephens. Survivors include daughter Judy (Jim) McKee, of Brewster, son-in-law Paul Stephens, of Colby, 11 grandkids, 32 great grandkids and 4 great-great grandchildren.

There will be a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. CST, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. CST Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Colby, with Father Brian Lager officiating, followed by interment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Colby. Charles Nick Wagoner was born in Colby, Kansas on June 29, 1934, to Greg and Margie Wagoner. He passed away on July 17, 2022, at Citizens Medical Center, at the age of 88. Charles attended Colby Public Schools, graduating in 1953 and went on to attend Barnes School of Business in Denver, Colorado. After graduating from college, Charles moved back to Colby and worked for his father at the family business, Wagoner and Sons. During this time, he met Patty Kelley, and they wed on January 25, 1958. Charles was sure to let everyone know that the reason he had to marry Patty was to get even with her because she drafted him into the Army. Their union was blessed with two children, Michael Wagoner and Michelle Phillips.

Charles remained in Colby and continued to work in the family business and as a local businessman until he passed away. He made many friends who turned into family throughout the years. We never knew how many people to expect at a holiday gathering because if someone had no place to go, Charles brought them home. Charles and Patty had lots of fun in their younger days whether it be Jeeping through the mountains, flying his plane, dancing until the sun came up, or burning the tops of his feet while traveling. His many hobbies and collections, too numerous to list, are a testament to his inquisitive and engaged mind. On weekends, Charles could often be spotted at auctions adding to his many collections. It is safe to say that some of his most prized possessions were his cars; he loved his cars. The grandkids will even tell you they are pretty sure some of the cars were more special than they were. They also remember that one of his many reminders “You might need that someday” was good advice and meant that he saved everything.

Charles worked hard and played hard. If it were up to him, we would all work seven days a week. Later in life, Charles did start to slow down, but only slightly! Charles and Patty traveled and attended car shows all over the United States. They were a highlight, and he planned his whole year around these events. He also loved his family. Whether it was working in the family business, traveling, or attending their activities, he was always there for them. Charles’ true-life story is in his family, friends, and business that he guided and nurtured throughout his entire life. He is much like the car parts that he sold in that his memory will continue on in the journey down the road.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Gregor and Margie Wagoner, brother Paul Wagoner, and grandson Nicholas Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Patty (Kelley) Wagoner, of Colby, his son Michael Wagoner and daughter Michelle Phillips, of Colby; his grandchildren Tara (Scott) Powell, of Colorado Springs, CO and Shawn (Maggie) Phillips, of Nekoma, KS; great-grandchildren Maleia and Hannah Powell; brother David (Marcia) Wagoner, of Colby, sister Tama (Roger) Sundquist, of Loomis NE, and sister-in-law Jeanie Wagoner of Colby. Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 23, 2022 at Sacred Heart Church in Colby. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022 at Baalmann Mortuary, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charles’s name to be decided at a later date.
