Halloween/All Saints Day
Written by Mrs. Kathy Elliott

We started a new tradition at our school of dressing as Saint’s for Halloween instead of in traditional “Halloween” costumes.  The Halloween tradition is actually tied to the Holy Day of All Saint’s.  “All Hallows Eve,” or Halloween as it came to be called, refers to the evening before All Saint’s Day.  This holiday originated as an ancient pagan festival for the dead.

The feasts of All Souls and All Saints were placed over these old holidays by Christians and the emphasis was changed to celebrating the memory of those who were “saints” in Christian tradition and those faithful departed souls of friends and family.

At Sacred Heart we are again asking the children to dress as a Saint for a parade of Saint’s in the gym (3:00 on October 31).  Everyone is welcome to attend this parade.  Following the parade, students will have their parties in their classrooms.  If you are in charge of the party you might consider tying it to All Saint’s Day in some way.

The Thomas County Coalition has also given us some healthy Halloween snack ideas or alternatives to food.  Please consider these healthy options instead of sugary drinks / treats.

All Saint’s Day is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church.
